WARNING: The following article contains spoilers from The Handmaid’s Tale season 2, episode 1.
In the first episode of The Handmaid’s Tale season two, Offred (played by Elisabeth Moss) was given special treatment because she was expecting a child.
Following the announcement, she was inspected in a local hospital with Serena Joy and Commander Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) by her side.
When it was confirmed that she was pregnant, the soon-to-be parents were taken to another room by the doctor.
As Offred got dressed following the examination, she found a key with a red marker on it in her brown boots.
She then noticed a red marker on a secret door in the room and proceeded to follow the discreet signs.
Offred ended up making her way into a butcher’s van which transported her to a nearby warehouse.
Once there she was met by Nick, the father of her unborn baby, who promised she would be taken out of the city.
In the meantime, Nick told her to cut off her hair and burn her handmaid’s uniform.
But Offred went one step further and cut off her ear leaving many viewers horrified.
However, there’s a reason why she sliced off her ear as she planned her escape.
When she was taken by the authorities and told she would be a handmaid, she was fitted with a tracking device.
By cutting off part of her ear, she was able to free herself from the state’s control.
This should also help her to escape from the city undetected.
But that didn’t stop viewers from squirming at the gruesome scene, with many taking to Twitter to comment.
“#HandmaidsTale back on terrifyingly good form,” one fan shared.
Another wrote: “Oh my god that ear scene #HandmaidsTale.”
A third continued: “‘Scenes some viewers may find disturbing…’ understatement of the year #HandmaidsTale.”
“OMG! That last scene! #handmaidstale,” someone else commented.
The Handmaid’s Tale season 2 continues Sunday on Channel 4 in the UK at 9pm.
