Rangers recall G Hellberg one day after Lundqvist injury

PITTSBURGH – The Rangers recalled goalie Magnus Hellberg from the Hartford Wolf Pack on Thursday morning, one day after Henrik Lundqvist left a 5-2 Game 1 loss to the Penguins at first intermission after teammate Marc Staal’s stick blade caught him in the right eye.

Backup Antti Raanta replaced Lundqvist for the final two periods. The team is off Thursday, holding a media availability at 11:15 a.m. at the team hotel before practicing on Friday at noon.

Magnus Hellberg has been recalled from the minors on Thursday.

If Lundqvist does not start Game 2, it will end a streak of 111 consecutive playoff starts he has made for the Rangers dating back to Kevin Weekes’ Game 2 spot start in 2006.

Lundqvist has been replaced only five times in a game during that stretch: twice by Steve Valiquette for a total of 40 minutes in 2009, twice by Cam Talbot for a total of 46 minutes in 2014, and once by Raanta on Wednesday.
